Certain MY 2019-2020 VAH, VHD, VNL and VNM models manufactured from July 2, 2018 through March 28, 2019. On certain vehicles, the torque applied to the t-bolt clasps on the transmission auxiliary air tank straps may have been over-torqued potentially causing deformation to the strap where the t-bolt is anchored. The deformation may allow the t-bolt to disconnect from the strap allowing the tank to drop to the ground, which may result in debris on the road presenting a risk to other road users.
Certain 2018-2020 VAH, VHD, VNL and VNM models manufactured from June 13, 2017 through March 28, 2019 . On certain vehicles, the fuse used in a transmission circuit has a rating that is lower than what is required. As a result, the fuse can open under normal operating conditions and cause the transmission to not shift. This does not affect the brake system; however, under certain conditions this may contribute to a vehicle crash.
Certain 2018-2020 VNL and VNS model vehicles manufactured from January 31, 2017 through January 11, 2019 . The adhesive bonding the glass to the window hinge and the redundant screw attachment is insufficient to hold thewindow in place if the truck is driven with the sleeper bunk windows in the open position. If the window detaches from the vehicle, it may strike another vehicle or pedestrian increasing the risk of personal injury or a vehicle crash.
Certain 2018-2019 VNL model vehicles manufactured from April 3, 2017 through June 11, 2018 . Eaton Corporation has determined that certain automated manual transmissions supplied by Eaton contain a safety related defect in the clutch assy. The issue as defined by Eaton is “an internal component within the clutch assembly may be outside of specification and fail, which in special circumstances could cause such clutch component to inhibit clutch departure. If the clutch departure becomes inhibited, unintended vehicle motion could occur. Accordingly, the defect can cause a vehicle impact.”
On certain 2003-2008 VHD model vehicles manufactured from December 11, 2002 through November 9, 2007 fitted with snow plow lamp prep-kits do not comply with Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 108, Lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment. Specifically, snow plow headlights can be turned on without other exterior lights, and high beam indicator does not work when snow plow high beams are on.
On certain 2003-2008 VHD model vehicles manufactured from December 17, 2002 through October 30, 2007 fitted with snow plow lamp prep-kits do not comply with U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 108, Lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment. Specifically, snow plow headlights can be turned on without other exterior lights, and high beam indicator does not work when snow plow high beams are on.
On certain 2008-2019 VHD model vehicles manufactured from November 14, 2007 through October 23, 2018 fitted with snow plow lamp prep-kits do not comply with U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle and the CanadianMotor Vehicle Safety Standard 108, Lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment. Specifically, snow plow headlights can be turned on without other exterior lights, and high beam indicator does not work when snow plow high beams are on.
On, certain VHD and VNL trucks manufactured in North America from May 21, 2018 through October 3, 2018 equipped with Bridgestone M864, M860A or M854 wide-base tires, size 425/65R22.5, may not conform to the endurancetesting requirements of Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 119 - Tires for vehicles other than passenger cars. This issue could cause a bulge or blister in the sidewall of the tires, which over time could cause deterioration of the tire’s structure.
On, Certain 2016-2019 VNL model vehicles manufactured with certain Cummins ISX engines, if the fuel pump cooling circuit screens become sufficiently restricted (e.g., due to aninordinate amount of debris from filtration material) and the engine is operated in an extended motoring condition, such as on a long down-hill grade, the engine may experience a burstnylon fuel line. If this occurs, the fuel line will leak fuel and the engine will not run when the operator depresses the accelerator.
Certain 2018 VNL and VNR model vehicles manufactured from June 9, 2018 to June 29, 2018 with a Jost brand fifth wheel. Jost International (Jost) may have sent a fifth wheel (1 in total) with a prototype component to VolvoTruck’s manufacturing facility. Specifically, the slide bracket width is too narrow. The potential consequence is that the fifth wheel may fail and cause the trailer to separate from the tractor.
Certain 2016 VNL and VNM model vehicles manufactured from March 20, 2015 through June 30, 2015 with a Dana steer axle. On certain vehicles, the castellated nut and cotter pin on the steer axle may not have been tightened to specification. This could cause the tie rod to become loose in the steer axle, which would result in audible noise and/or looseness in steering. If the vehicle were continued to be operated in this condition, the tie rod could disconnect from the knuckle, resulting in a complete loss of control of a vehicle wheel, which would increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage toproperty.
Certain 2015-2017 VHD model vehicles manufactured from August 29, 2014 through October 17, 2016 and shipped with spare tire(s) for the pusher or tag axle. The gross axle weight rating for the pusher or tag axle may be incorrectly stated on the incomplete vehicle information label. This is a non-compliance with 49CFR567, Certification.
Certain parameters used to control the cycling of the electronic air dryer are incorrect; the parameters were set to low at 1/3 of the required volume of air to purge the desiccant. As a result, more condensation may occur and be passed through the air system as compared to an air dryer with the correct parameters. This may allow oil and water to contaminate the brake system, which over time and under certain conditions such as cold weather may affect brake performance.
The front hubs used do not support the gross axle weight rating of the front axle. Specifically, 5,987 Kg (13,200 lbs.) rated front hubs were used on trucks requiring a 6,622 Kg (14,600 lbs.) rated front axle. This can result in premature failure of the hub, bearings etc., which may cause the front hub assembly to separate from the front axle. If the front hub assembly separates, the driver may lose control of the vehicle or parts may be dropped on the road that can present a risk for other motorist.
A defect in the ball joint seals on the drag link could allow corrosion to form in the joint, leading to accelerated wear. This could result in ball joint failure, potentially resulting in a loss of steering control which could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property.
According to Meritor, the axle lot may have been improperly heat treated causing a nonconforming metallurgical microstructure. The out of spec hardness of beam FF-967 diminishes its life and may lead to fracture. Failure of beam could lead to a loss of vehicle control and a vehicle crash.
The Engine Control Module may develop an internal electrical short circuit, possibly resulting in an engine stall without warning (and without the ability to restart). This can lead to an increased risk of a crash.Cummins has released field Campaign C1792 “ISX12 and ISX15 CM2350 ECM Safety Campaign” to correct this condition by replacing the Engine Control Module. This campaign is available at Cummins Distributors and Cummins-authorized Warranty Dealers. The repair will be completed free of charge and most applications will require approximately 2 hours to complete. Contact the nearest Cummins Distributor or Cummins-authorized Warranty Dealer to arrange to have this campaign performed on your engine. The distributor or dealer will work with you to schedule the best date to complete this repair.
VOLVO Trucks North America has determined that a defect that relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain VN 2016 and 2017 model vehicles manufactured from May 11, 2015 to March 8, 2016. The bolt connecting the upper steering shaft to the lower steering shaft at the junction block may not properly secure the upper steering shaft. Also the roll pin that secures that the lower shaft may have not been installed. As a result, the upper steering shaft may separate without warning with complete loss of steering which may result in a vehicle crash.
Roll pin may be missing at junction block on the Willi Elbe brand 2 piece steering shaft used on certain Volvo trucks and the upper yoke on the Willi Elbe brand one piece shaft used on certain Mack trucks.Separation of the steering shaft may occur, which results in complete loss of steering.
The ball joint seal may be compromised, which can allow water and other contaminants to enter the ball joint. If water and contaminants enter the ball joint, corrosion can occur and lead to accelerated wear, which over time can result in failure of the ball joint.If this is left untreated, the ball can separate from the socket and result in complete loss of steering which may result in a vehicle crash.
The bolt at the junction block is not torqued to the correct specification (lower than what is required). As a result, the bolt can loosen, which may result in separation of the two shafts. Separation of the two shafts results in complete loss of steering which may result in a vehicle crash.
According to Cummins, "The Engine Control Module (ECM) may develop an internal electrical short circuit that could possibly blow a fuse in the ECM's electrical supply circuit, resulting in an engine stall without warning. If this occurs, the engine cannot be restarted until the ECM and fuse are replaced."
According to Eaton, "When the transmission shift lever is moved from reverse to neutral, the reverse gear may stay engaged. When the transmission shift lever is moved from reverse to a forward gear position, the transmission may mechanically lock (i.e., both the reverse gear and forward gear engage simultaneously)."
VOLVO Trucks North America has determined a defect relating to motor vehicle safety may exist in certain VOLVO VN trucks manufactured between 04/14/2008 and 12/23/2014. The draglink rod boot may be compromised and enable dirt/water to contaminate the draglink rod ball socket on some VOLVO VN trucks equipped with a sealed Uresko draglink rod. If this condition is untreated, failure of the ball socket and a complete loss of steering may be possible. Replacement of the existing draglink rod with a new greasable draglink (part number below) is necessary to prevent dirt/water contamination. The mounting hardware should be replaced with new mounting hardware each time the draglink rod is replaced. Follow the repair procedure outlined in this Safety Recall.VOLVO Trucks considers this as a proactive measure to protect the public and VOLVO’s customers from the potential risk associated with this defect.
Reference Fontaine Recall 15E-066 Fontaine Fifth Wheel Company (Fontaine) is recalling certain Ultra LT Fifth Wheel connectors, part number SLTPL4000, manufactured July 29, 2009 to May 27, 2013. Over time, improper coupling techniques may result in cumulative damage to the fifth wheel and its locking mechanism, which in turn may result in the locking mechanism failing to operate or to properly engage.
“Idle Free Systems, Inc. (IFS) is recalling certain Electric Auxiliary Power Units (APU), part number BA600, manufactured October 1, 2009, to April 30, 2015. The affected APUs have a metal housing whose mounting points may crack and tear (“Defect A”). Additionally, the mounting bolts of the power units may loosen or possibly fail (“Defect B”).”If the mounting points crack and tear or the attaching bolts loosen or fail the power unit may detach from the truck, and become a safety hazard.
According to OSRAM, “The subject headlamps may not meet the minimum intensity requirements at certain test points as specified in CMVSS No. 108, S10.13.3 and TablesXVIII and XIX-b.”Also according to OSRAM, “These headlamps may not provide sufficient illumination of distant objects or the roadway. Insufficient illumination could result in a vehicle crash.”
The cut out in the trim panel may restrict the trailer hand brake handle from returning to the off position. Therefore, the trailer service brakes may drag, which can cause the wheel end to overheat and potentially cause a wheel end fire or tire blowout.Volvo has received no reports of wheel end fires or tire blowouts as a result of this condition. Therefore, Volvo considers this as a proactive measure to protect the public and Volvo’s customers from the potential risk associated with this defect.
The draglink sealed ball socket boot may be damaged due to the angle of the ball stud. If the boot is compromised, contaminants may enter the ball socket and cause corrosion that can accelerate the wear of the ball. If this is left untreated, the ball joint can separate from the socket and result in complete loss of steering.Volvo has received no reports of crashes or personal injury as a result of this condition. Therefore, Volvo considers this as a proactive measure to protect the public and Volvo’s customers from the potential risk associated with this defect.
According to Cummins, “Under conditions of excessive engine crankcase pressures, the 90-degree elbow of the vent tube assembly may become detached from the breather, possibly allowing engine oil to come into contact with hot surfaces. Engine oil contacting hot surfaces may ignite, possibly resulting in a fire.”Also Cummins stated that “Conditions which result in high engine crankcase pressure may result in a loss of engine power, may illuminate amber or red engine diagnostic lamps on the vehicle instrument cluster, or may result in erratic engine operation.”
According to Haldex, “during the assembly of the Life Seal actuator unit, the internal rubber diaphragm may not be fully seated in the spring piston of the parking brake section, thereby causing internal leakage from the service section past the diaphragm and potentially trapping air pressure in the parking brake section. This air pressure in turn, if not vented, may prevent full release of the actuator unit, and may induce dragging and overheated wheel end foundation service brakes.”The potential risk is for overheating at the wheel end, which increasing the risk of fire.
A software issue may prevent the drivetrain from reengaging when coming out of Eco-Roll. This may happen without prior warning and may under certain conditions increase the stopping distance of the vehicle.
A premature tire failure may occur on the front or steer axle as a result of certain operating conditions (i.e. high speeds, load, and road temperature). A premature tire failure may result in a vehicle crash.
The engine control unit may have an incorrect parameter setting in the software, which may cause the engine to stall. If the engine stalls, the power steering and other safety related devices can become inoperable which increases the risk of a vehicle crash.
The bolts that hold the disc brake caliper to the backing plate may have not been tightened to specification; therefore, the disc brake caliper may come detached from the backing plate. If this occurs, the brakes at that particular wheel will be affected, which may result in the vehicle “pulling” to the left or right when the brakes are applied.
A program error occurred that can result in the active braking feature of the enhanced cruise control to be disabled. As a result, the enhanced cruise control system on the affected vehicles may not automatically activate the brakes as designed, which may result in a vehicle crash.This issue does not affect the driver warnings of the system or the service and park brakes of the vehicle.
