On certain vehicles, the steering gear was assembled with fewer than the required number of recirculating balls which can lead to a fracture in the steering gear worm-shaft. A steering gear with fewer than the required number of recirculating balls may bind when loads are applied. In some cases, the balls may align on the same side of the gear's worm-shaft and concentrated loads may cause the gear's internal parts to fracture resulting in a possible loss of vehicle steering. Loss of steering increases the risk of a crash.
The repair for this issue is under development at this time.

Description
Volvo has determined that on certain model year 2022 vehicles the tail lamps do not turn on when the daytime running lamps (DRLs) are on. New Canadian regulations require that if a vehicle has dash backlighting, the low beam headlamps and tail lamps must automatically switch on when it is dark or the tail lamps must stay on at all times. Driving without tail lamps in low light conditions could make the truck less visible and increase the risk of a crash.
To correct this the vehicle software will be updated at a Volvo Parts and Service Center.

Description
Volvo has determined that proprietary hubcap wheel covers lack the spring retention force required to retain the hubcap to the wheel. These wheel covers could become separated from the vehicle while in motion. If the hubcap cover comes off, it can result in a hazard to other road users and potentially result in an injury.
At this time, Volvo Trucks is requiring the defective covers be removed and destroyed.
Replacement covers should be available by the end of the 3rd Quarter or the beginning of the 4th Quarter 2021. Once these covers are available, there will be a follow up service campaign to provide the replacement branded covers. Dealers and customers will be notified when parts are available.

Description
On certain vehicles, the Daytime Running Light (DRL) manual override switch programming was set to automatically reactivate at a speed of 24 kilometers per hour (kph). As a result, the vehicles in question do not comply with section 30(c) of Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 108. Under certain conditions this may result in a delayed re-activation of the DRLs that exceeds the distance requirement, which may increase the risk of a vehicle crash.

Description
On certain vehicles, the collets (internal jaws) for the brass fitting inserts used in the pneumatic (air) pass-through plate may have been damaged during leak testing by the supplier, Norgren. The potential consequence is the brass fitting may completely release the air brake line from the pass-through plate while under pressure. If this occurs on the park brake circuit, signal pressure that holds the mechanical spring in the park brake chambers will be lost allowing the park brakes to apply.
If the park brakes apply, the driver may lose control of the vehicle under certain conditions increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.

The window hinge and mounting hardware are insufficient to hold the window in place if the truck is driven with the sleeper bunk windows open. If the window detaches from the vehicle, it may strike another vehicle or pedestrian increasing the risk of personal injury or a vehicle crash.

Description
The die cast pedal plate may have a casting process issue that can result in failure of the pedal plate at one of three attachment ears that support the brake pedal shaft. If the attachment ear fails and the brake pedal shaft works its way out of one of the two other attachment holes, the brake pedal may dislodge, making the brake pedal inoperable. An inoperable brake pedal presents a risk of a vehicle crash.
There are no reports of an inoperable brake pedal or a vehicle crash related to this issue. Volvo considers this a proactive measure to protect the public and Volvo’s customers from the potential risk associated with this defect.

The deformation may allow the t-bolt to disconnect from the strap allowing the tank to drop to the ground, which may result in debris on the road presenting a risk to other road users.

This campaign is available at Cummins Distributors and Cummins-authorized Warranty Dealers. The draglink rod boot may be compromised and enable dirt/water to contaminate the draglink rod ball socket on some VOLVO VN trucks equipped with a sealed Uresko draglink rod. If this condition is untreated, failure of the ball socket and a complete loss of steering may be possible. Replacement of the existing draglink rod with a new greasable draglink (part number below) is necessary to prevent dirt/water contamination. The mounting hardware should be replaced with new mounting hardware each time the draglink rod is replaced. Follow the repair procedure outlined in this Safety Recall.

The draglink sealed ball socket boot may be damaged due to the angle of the ball stud. Description
On certain vehicles, the collets (internal jaws) for the brass fitting inserts used in the pneumatic (air) pass-through plate may have been damaged during leak testing by the supplier, Norgren. The potential consequence is the brass fitting may completely release the air brake line from the pass-through plate while under pressure. If this occurs on the park brake circuit, signal pressure that holds the mechanical spring in the park brake chambers will be lost allowing the park brakes to apply.
If the park brakes apply, the driver may lose control of the vehicle under certain conditions increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.

The window hinge and mounting hardware are insufficient to hold the window in place if the truck is driven with the sleeper bunk windows open. If the window detaches from the vehicle, it may strike another vehicle or pedestrian increasing the risk of personal injury or a vehicle crash.

Description
The die cast pedal plate may have a casting process issue that can result in failure of the pedal plate at one of three attachment ears that support the brake pedal shaft. If the attachment ear fails and the brake pedal shaft works its way out of one of the two other attachment holes, the brake pedal may dislodge, making the brake pedal inoperable. An inoperable brake pedal presents a risk of a vehicle crash.
There are no reports of an inoperable brake pedal or a vehicle crash related to this issue. Volvo considers this a proactive measure to protect the public and Volvo’s customers from the potential risk associated with this defect.

Description
Certain MY 2019-2020 VAH, VHD, VNL and VNM models manufactured from July 2, 2018 through March 28, 2019. On certain vehicles, the torque applied to the t-bolt clasps on the transmission auxiliary air tank straps may have been over-torqued potentially causing deformation to the strap where the t-bolt is anchored. The deformation may allow the t-bolt to disconnect from the strap allowing the tank to drop to the ground, which may result in debris on the road presenting a risk to other road users.

If the clutch departure becomes inhibited, unintended vehicle motion could occur. Accordingly, the defect can cause a vehicle impact.”

On certain vehicles, the castellated nut and cotter pin on the steer axle may not have been tightened to specification. Description
Certain parameters used to control the cycling of the electronic air dryer are incorrect; the parameters were set to low at 1/3 of the required volume of air to purge the desiccant. As a result, more condensation may occur and be passed through the air system as compared to an air dryer with the correct parameters. This may allow oil and water to contaminate the brake system, which over time and under certain conditions such as cold weather may affect brake performance.

The front hubs used do not support the gross axle weight rating of the front axle. Specifically, 5,987 Kg (13,200 lbs.) rated front hubs were used on trucks requiring a 6,622 Kg (14,600 lbs.) rated front axle. This can result in premature failure of the hub, bearings etc., which may cause the front hub assembly to separate from the front axle. If the front hub assembly separates, the driver may lose control of the vehicle or parts may be dropped on the road that can present a risk for other motorist.

The Engine Control Module may develop an internal electrical short circuit, possibly resulting in an engine stall without warning (and without the ability to restart). This can lead to an increased risk of a crash.
Cummins has released field Campaign C1792 “ISX12 and ISX15 CM2350 ECM Safety Campaign” to correct this condition by replacing the Engine Control Module. This campaign is available at Cummins Distributors and Cummins-authorized Warranty Dealers. The repair will be completed free of charge and most applications will require approximately 2 hours to complete. VOLVO Trucks North America has determined that a defect that relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain VN 2016 and 2017 model vehicles manufactured from May 11, 2015 to March 8, 2016. The bolt connecting the upper steering shaft to the lower steering shaft at the junction block may not properly secure the upper steering shaft. Also the roll pin that secures that the lower shaft may have not been installed. As a result, the upper steering shaft may separate without warning with complete loss of steering which may result in a vehicle crash.

VOLVO Trucks North America has determined a defect relating to motor vehicle safety may exist in certain VOLVO VN trucks manufactured between 04/14/2008 and 12/23/2014. The draglink rod boot may be compromised and enable dirt/water to contaminate the draglink rod ball socket on some VOLVO VN trucks equipped with a sealed Uresko draglink rod. If this condition is untreated, failure of the ball socket and a complete loss of steering may be possible. Replacement of the existing draglink rod with a new greasable draglink (part number below) is necessary to prevent dirt/water contamination. The mounting hardware should be replaced with new mounting hardware each time the draglink rod is replaced. Follow the repair procedure outlined in this Safety Recall.

The cut out in the trim panel may restrict the trailer hand brake handle from returning to the off position. Therefore, the trailer service brakes may drag, which can cause the wheel end to overheat and potentially cause a wheel end fire or tire blowout.

The draglink sealed ball socket boot may be damaged due to the angle of the ball stud. According to Cummins, “Under conditions of excessive engine crankcase pressures, the 90-degree elbow of the vent tube assembly may become detached from the breather, possibly allowing engine oil to come into contact with hot surfaces. Engine oil contacting hot surfaces may ignite, possibly resulting in a fire.”
Also Cummins stated that “Conditions which result in high engine crankcase pressure may result in a loss of engine power, may illuminate amber or red engine diagnostic lamps on the vehicle instrument cluster, or may result in erratic engine operation.”

According to Haldex, “during the assembly of the Life Seal actuator unit, the internal rubber diaphragm may not be fully seated in the spring piston of the parking brake section, thereby causing internal leakage from the service section past the diaphragm and potentially trapping air pressure in the parking brake section. This air pressure in turn, if not vented, may prevent full release of the actuator unit, and may induce dragging and overheated wheel end foundation service brakes.”
The potential risk is for overheating at the wheel end, which increasing the risk of fire.
